Maryhill SSP

During the Easter holidays Wyndford parents occupied their two primaries in the campaign to save their schools. Then parents from OLA Primary in Bilsland Drive, Ruchill, Maryhill in north Glasgow and Victoria Primary in Govanhill in the south side of Glasgow occupied their schools in the run up to the council’s final decision meeting on Thurs 23rd April 2009 where a blockade organised by the SOS campaign took place.

At Our Lady of the Assumption, parents occupied the roof of the school building for several days in all weathers with just a couple of tents between them. They also made a one-day rooftop protest in March. Unfortunately, the council voted to close 22 out of 25 schools and it is reported that another 34 are now being earmarked for closure. But the parents have vowed to fight on and do what it takes to stop the closures. Parents held hands round the schools protests, then on 14th May they lobbied the Scottish parliament and several MSPs signed a declaration to support the campaign and raise the issue in parliament.
