On December 5th 2009 the Wave, a series of environmental protest marches in several cities took place to coincide with the climate change summit (COP15) in Copenhagen where world leaders as expected just paid lip-service to tackling the problems of global warming and climate change. The change in climate and melting of the polar ice-caps has precipitated even faster than scientists originally feared with the prospects of more frequent and greater flooding and other environmental disasters already a reality for some countries. Developed countries are the biggest polluters with industrial and military pollution causing higher Co2 levels in the atmosphere. Both causes of pollution are largely unnecessary, as many wars are started not for defence but economic gain, and over-consumption fuelled by advertising is what leads to over-production in industry.
In Glasgow the Wave was held for the third year running and was the biggest Glasgow Wave yet. Below are some pictures of the demonstration which started in Bellahouston Park in the south-west of Glasgow and ended up in Kelvingrove Park in Glasgow’s west end for a rally. SSP members also participated in the march and the Scottish Socialist Youth flag can be seen among the banners. |
